From the Counselor’s Desk: September 8, 2009 Issue 2 I hope the beginning of your senior year is going well. I know several of you are already thinking about what colleges you would like to learn more about. If you are planning to attend college you need to start investigating and narrowing down your choices. You need to consider what major you may want to pursue. You will want to acquire applications and look at the entrance requirements for the college(s) in which you are most interested. On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, you will have the opportunity to accumulate some of those applications from state and surrounding colleges at the College Fair at USAO in Chickasha. We will load the buses and leave from the high school at approximately 8:20 and we will return by lunch time. · Just a note of advice: Be aware of possible scholarship scams. There are some individuals that say they can get you scholarship dollars and charge you a fee. There is no reason to pay someone to find you scholarship dollars. You can do the work yourself; it just takes a little time on your behalf. Utilize the websites and other resources that you receive from me. Some of these scams end up soliciting student loans, so be careful. · The next available ACT Test is October 24; the deadline to register is September 18th. Registration information is available against the west wall in my office. Do not wait until next June to take the test if you are planning to apply for scholarships. I would strongly suggest taking it in October as some awards and scholarships have an early registration date and require ACT scores. · If you are planning to play a NCAA or Division One sport make sure you register with the NCAA and have your ACT test scores sent directly to them, by using the college school code 9999. To register with the NCAA go to: ncaaclearinghouse.net · The after school tutoring program begins today, September 8, 2009. If you are looking for ways to do community service this is a great opportunity. Any time that you could lend would be appreciated. · SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY: Wendy’s High School Heisman Award The scholarship is awarded to both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. You must have a 3.0 GPA or higher to apply and participate in at least one school sponsored sport. To register and begin the application process login to: www.wendysheisman.com. Applications must be submitted by October 1, 2009. · SHCOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY: Coca-Cola Scholarship deadline is October 31, 2009. Students who qualify should be highly motivated, dedicated, and involved in their school. If you are interested and would like to apply go to: www.coca-colascholars.org. · SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY: Elk’s National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship There will be various amounts of scholarships awarded. Application deadline is November 2, 2009. This is a very extensive application, I do have a couple of copies in my office or you may download a copy at www.elks.org/enf/scholars. The application needs to be submitted to: Oklahoma City Elks Lodge, PO Box 12307, Oklahoma City, 73157. Check out the suggestions for filling out an application on the back and have a great week.
