Counselor's Corner

From the Counselor’s Desk:                                                    November 10, 2009   Issue 5

IMPORTANT NOTICE THAT EFFECTS CON-CURRENT ENROLLMENT:

Any concurrent college level course will be transcripted to your high school transcript according to Senate Bill 290.  You will be given a high school credit for the course work.  Courses will be aligned with Tuttle High School course weight identification with the exception of U.S. Government for this current school year only.  For this current school year college level government will still be recognized as a 5.0 class, after this year it will be weighted as a 4.0 class.  Only courses that parallel as a weighted course at Tuttle High School will be granted a weighted status (5.0).  For example: College Algebra would parallel Algebra III and would be considered a weighted course, while Biology I would be figured on a non-weighted scale (4.0).

Now is the time to be requesting applications and scholarships from the college(s) that you may wish to attend.  I have some applications in my office, if you are planning to go out of state and need help finding applications, please let me know.   Also, if you are going to need a letter of recommendation, consider whom you may ask to write it and be considerate of them to give ample time to write.  Are you still trying to narrow your choice?  Do not forget you have two college days that you may use to make campus visits.  You need the form signed by Mr. Odam or Mr. Ragsdale before making your visit.  You need to be working on essays for scholarship deadlines.  If you are not planning on going to college, remember that the technology centers offer the Next Step Scholarship for students to learn a trade occupation.

OTHER INFORMATION:

·   The University of Oklahoma offers a seven hour ACT prep class.  The cost is $90.  and is offered every couple of months prior to a national test date.  If you are interested, please come by and I will get you the necessary application and information, or you may call 405-325-6897 or contact http://youth.ou.edu.

·   Just a note of advice:  Be aware of possible scholarship scams.  There are some individuals that say they can get you scholarship dollars and charge you a fee.  There is no reason to pay someone to find you scholarship dollars.  You can do the work yourself; it just takes a little time on your behalf.  Utilize the websites and other resources that you receive from me. Some of these scams end up soliciting student loans, so be careful.

·   If you are planning to play a NCAA or Division One sport make sure you register with the NCAA and have your ACT test scores sent directly to them, by using the college school code 9999.  To register with the NCAA go to:  ncaaclearinghouse.net

·         If you are interested in attending OU I have an email full of information that I can forward to you with lots of helpful dates.  If interested come by my office or send me an email and I will forward it on to you.
